Topic: Class size and student success
|
What
is the author's main point? The authors main point was that with a smaller
class size a student can gain knowledge more easily and will in turn
perform higher on assessments. |
| What
does the author say? In this article the author talks about five
schools in Durham, North Carolina where smaller class sizes were being
used. The author discusses how students in these classes were given
assessment tests to see how the smaller class sizes were effecting the
knowledge the students were gaining. It goes onto say that the students
in these smaller classes preformed higher on these assessments then
students in larger classes. |
What
do I think? In my opinion what the author is saying is
correct. By viewing the data collected at the North Carolina schools I
can clearing see the increase in assessment performance. Although only
five schools participated in this survey I believe that this outcome or
a similar one would be seen if smaller class sizes were implemented
anywhere. |

|
Topic: Life in small-class size classrooms
|
What
is the author's main point? The overall point the author was stating was that
a smaller classroom environment is a very supportive place for a
learner. |
| What
does the author say? The author of this article discusses a study that
was conducted to view the effects of small class size on student’s
time on tasks, academic focus in the classroom, and types of
interactions between teachers and students, and students and students.
This study took place at two long term class reduction sites. The author
explains that at these two sites students on task times and academic
focus were consistently higher. |
What
do I think? I also think that with a smaller class the
environment would be much more supportive. When there are less children
in a classroom each student can receive a larger amount of one on one
time with the teacher. When there is more one on one time for a student
they are better able to understand what they are expected to learn
because more of their questions will be answered. Also with more one on
one time the teacher can assure that every student comprehends the
information being taught in the class. |

Topic:
Small classes and small schools
|
What
is the author's main point? The main point the author was trying to prove is
that small class and school size are very important. |
| What
does the author say? The author of this article explains why he feels
class size and school size are so important. The author was once a
teacher so personal experience plays a role in this article. Also a
study of eight teachers in Chicago is discussed in this article. |
What
do I think? I agree with the author when he says that small
class size and small school size are very important. I agree because
more individual attention can be given to every student in cases like
this which can be very beneficial to the learner. |
