The Future of Information in Education

A Summary of Three Articles

Technology in education is rapidly growing.  Soon, entire courses are going to be available on the internet to students of all ages.  Even elementary school age students will take courses on the internet.  Since courses will be on the internet, teachers will be needed in areas very different than the ones they are used to.  Now teachers will be there to help teach students social skills.  They will also be able to provide more one on one time than before.  Teachers in the future will be more like social workers than what we consider teachers today.  Not only will there be online courses but for elementary schools, things like school newspapers will be part of the curriculum.  The main idea is that schools will not only teach academics, but will also teach the social skills necessary for children. These online courses will start at college level.  From there they will move to making high school level courses, then middle school, then elementary school online courses.  The point of these online courses is to enable the students to work hands on with real world projects.  The students will also go on field trips so that they will be able to work with the community and help build their social skills.

One mans opinion of what education should be like in the future is that there should be an individualized learning plan specially designed for each student based on their needs with help from everyone around them.  It is necessary for the learner to not only want to learn, but to set goals for his/herself in order to be able to succeed.  With the new technology of the future, this hope could very easily happen.  The internet will be filled with useful information just waiting for the students to find it.  Another man said, in the future he hopes to obtain equal right for all students.  He hopes that disabled students will have the tools necessary to be equal will non disabled students.  He hopes that there will be computers and all other necessary things available for disabled students.  One other man said, the major issue in the future will be our adaptation to change.  He said that everything around us is changing and that education needs to be able to change with it.  Teachers will now need to play more of a facilitator role rather than the person who gives out the knowledge.  These are the changes that we need to be aware of for the future.

What issues in educational technology will help shape the next millennium?

This article expresses how it is very difficult to predict the future.  This also being true for the future of education.  It goes on to say that one day the internet could be replaced with something else.  The reason it has not happened yet is because the internet is still growing, in a way replacing itself.  Everything is going to be economical and wireless in the future.  They will try to make all hardware cheaper, faster, and smaller.  Also, software will be free and also offered by subscription.  In the future many new things will be possible.  In the future people will have CD type players in their watches and their will computers in cars.  With all these other changes, education is bond to change too.  It will need to change to meet the new demands of society.
