Scenario You are a first year teacher and your principal is quite impressed with your ability to seamlessly integrate technology into the classroom curriculum. The principal has observed your enthusiasm when mentoring the more experienced teachers to help them to make good use of technology in their teaching.

The county is organizing a technology conference and your principal has asked you to submit a proposal to present a brief paper on Assistive Technology, Web Accessibility and Universal Design. Paper submissions should respond to the following questions:

Answers

What is Assistive Technology?

ThinkPort—An Online resource for Maryland teachers. http://www.thinkport.org

AssistiveTech.net- Assistive Technology Resources http://www.assistivetech.net/about/index.cfm

Assistive Technology is technology that is used to assist disabled students with learning. The technology may enhance or change methods of using technology in order for a disabled student to participate in the activity.

What assistive technology devices may be useful in your school and why?

AT products and practical uses: http://pages.towson.edu/pryan/at/projects.htm

Assistive Technology at Towson University: http://pages.towson.edu/pryan/at/paper.htm

Microsoft Assistive Technology Products: http://www.microsoft.com/enable/at/types.aspx

Many assistive technology devices may be useful in my school.  Such as Electronic pointing devices which are used to control the cursor on the screen without using hands. Another Assistive Technology tool is a Trackball, a movable ball on top of a base that can be used to move the cursor on screen. Lastly, Touch screens allow for the direct selection or activation of the computer by touching the screen.  They are either built into the computer monitor or can be added onto a computer monitor.

What is Web Accessibility?

Web Accessibility Initiative: http://www.w3.org/WAI/

(The resources panel and FAQ may be useful.)

Web Accessibility is creating a website that any and all users can easily navigate through.

How can one test to see if a website is accessible to people with disabilities? Describe.

WebXACT is a service that evaluates web sites for quality, accessibility and privacy issues. This service is supported by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST). http://webxact.watchfire.com/

I can test to see if a website is accessible to people with disabilities by using http://webxact.watchfire.com. Additionally, I know that websites ending in .org, .edu and .gov are typically very informative and reliable websites.

Provide an example: What are some barriers within your online instructional technology portfolio that are exposed when it is evaluated using the WebXACT service?

WebXACT service: http://webxact.watchfire.com/

Some barriers within my online instructional technology portfolio that are exposed when it is evaluated using the WebXACT service is that the user is automatically redirected by the web server to other links.

What is Universal Design?

What are the principles of Universal Design (UD Principles)?

Center for Universal Design:

http://www.design.ncsu.edu/cud/

Universal Design originally began to help people with disabilities. However, as it has expanded, Universal Design helps people with many backgrounds on a daily basis. For example, a ramp leading into a building as well as stairs. The ramp would help someone in a wheelchair as well as someone who has a cart of supplies to take into the building.

Provide examples for some of the principles.

Principles and T. Ryan’s brief reflections on each: http://pages.towson.edu/pryan/at/universaldesign.htm

Some examples for the principles are buttons on doors for handicapped people, ramps for wheelchairs and room for a wheelchair to navigate through.

What references did you use?

Be sure to include a list of references your paper proposal.
