Spreadsheets are useful to both teachers and students.  For teachers, as shown below, spreadsheets allow them to keep track of student's progress throughout the year.  Furthermore, it gives them the option to display the grades in a graphic to the students.  Microsoft Excel provides convenience to teachers because it eliminates having to carrying around gradebooks as well.  For students, spreadsheets can also be used to keep track of their own grades throughout the year or to present a project.  For example, in a math class I could give each student a bag of M&Ms, and ask that they plot on a spreadsheet the ratio of colors and/or of calories in each individual M&M.  Since spreadsheets require the use of formulas, their use will reinforce the importance of formulas not only in math textbooks, but in other applications.
