Why art education? With tightening budgets, school systems often have heated debates about this question. Educators frequently believe core subjects such as math, social studies, and science are of more importance then art. However, art is the only subject that transcends language and cultural boundaries in order to communicate ideas.

My goal as an art educator is to teach students problem solving skills, creative thinking, self-expression, and communication while incorporating interdisciplinary education. By being active with my colleagues I hope to incorporate lessons being taught in other subjects in my classroom. I want to teach students that there is often more then one solution to a problem. Abstract thinking skills can be translated into other subjects such as science and math. It is my ultimate goal to teach my students how to become life long learners.

It is my belief that art education can positively affect many facets of a child’s educational experience. Students face many obstacles such as diversity, technology, and social acceptance. A major common bond between all cultures throughout the world is art. As our country continues to grow in diversity it is becoming more necessary to teach our children about other cultures. Through visual art students can understand different cultures and become more diversified. Technology is another new addition to the life of a student. It is my belief that educators must be flexible and embrace technology rather than try and compete with it. I have extensive knowledge with technology and hope to incorporate it in my daily art lessons. Education in the arts also promotes imagination. Art builds self-confidence because it appeals to all learning styles. I want to educate my students about how art can be a healing tool and confidence builder. Art has made a positive impact on my life. I hope to have a positive impact on the intellectual, social and emotional development of my students.
