I had the pleasure of seeing Battery: Masters of Metallica again. This time around, Nick and I were given the V.I.P. treatment along with the standard rockin' showcase of Metallica favorites. Once again, here's a blog I wrote a few days after the concert:
"Only way to feel the noise is when it's good and loud"

IT WAS FREAKIN' AWESOME!
The two opening bands? Not so much. The first band was what looked like a hogpog of 12 years olds with pretend tattoos; each one playing a different song at the same time. The second band, definitally not what this little headbanger's into... and the fan base? Middle school girls and their parents. But I'll touch on the guitarist for the second band (which is what I'd call a gothic type metal band). He played a nice lookin' Gibson Explorer, the gothic style or what not with the banana headstock. Well guess what. He could play. AND he goes to my college. I saw him in the hallway in the arts building. Nice guy. :) Cookie for him.

So now on to Battery!

I had bugged the Recher to bring back Battery and then they did.  So Brian being nice and fun, he recognized Nick and me sitting outside the theater doors two hours before the doors open and let us in early to watch the bands setup. That was a lot of fun. But the only picture I have that turned out was one of Jay testin' his pretty Jackson Randy Rhodes (that's a guitar).
Nice shirt by the way. But don't worry ladies, he loses it soon enough.
Brian brought JJ over to meet us real briefly and we did that whole "wow" thing. Because you know what? They are wow. Okay, so fast forward an hour or so, people start coming in, Nick and me get or spot front and center (just like that last time). And go figure the two guys to show up next to me are the great Chris and Tim duo. Fantastic. These guys? Well, you know those two old dudes from the Muppets? Yeah, that's Christ and Tim. They make fun of everything and love metal. And I... I love them. Again we fastforward through the opening bands, insert funny comments from the Duo, blah blah blah.

BATTERY!

Well, they played wonderfully and rocked as hard as any metalhead could hope to be rocked. My highlight? When they played Fuel. So what, I'm a sucker for the Load and Reload albums... and Fuel's my favorite Metallica song. *ducks* Later, JJ was like "how 'bout a drinking song" (metal guys like to drink... on stage... while playing... and smoking. Fun.) And I was like "are they really gonna?" And dude, they did. They played the "Whiskey in the Jar" song from Garage Inc 1. Have you ever heard that song? It's fantastic. And sooo much fun to hear live.
During the Orion song (Phil nailed that sucker to the wall like a Roman), JJ and Jay come down into the crowd and played with us. It was... yup, fantastic! I mean, I wouldn't have done it. Have you ever looked behind you during a concert? The moshes, friend, the crazies are crazy indeed. Of well, they knew what they were doing and did it right well. AND JJ and Jay also had a solo duel on the stage which was funtastic and then came down into that little area in the front of the gate (that would be right in front of me *giggles*) and played... thus the great shots.
Another highlight of the evening (besides the solos, Phil's bass spectacular, and the crowd thing), JJ took over drums while the wonderful Laurence came to the front and played JJ's ESP during one of the songs. And he did very well. Unfortunately, that's one of the pictures that didn't come out.
After the set, Nick and I waited to have a few words with the band. I don't know where Phil was, but I got a picture with Jay and his RR (but that didn't come out ), hablabed with JJ, and finally got to meet Laurence, the drummer. Brian had told him about Nick and I waiting outside for 3 hours to see them last time. So Brian and Laurence presented me with the honorary drum sticks.
So to sum up all the random memories I took away from that gig: it was a long-butt set (almost 4 hours) of Metallica goodness that I shall never forget. Those guys were my first metal concert ever, and once again, there was no room for disappointment. Not only do they kick-butt on stage, but they're the coolest guys to talk to after the set. Even if they are a little... wasted.
