Learning Goal:
- The ability to discriminate
initial sounds of words
- The ability to categorize words based
on the initial sound
- The ability to generate ideas and
topics for writing
- The ability to use prewriting and
drafting strategies to formulate text
|
| Target Audience/ Grade Level: Kindergarten
students |
Specific Learning
Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the initial
sound of "F"
- Students will be able to use
prewriting strategies to formulate a story
|
Materials:
- Feel for F's grab bag that consists
of objects beginning with the initial sound of "F"
- A small bucket/bag for each
student or for groups of students
- A large area that consists of
objects that have various initial and final sounds
|
Teacher Preparation
- Develop a list of words that have the
initial sound of "F"
- Categorize the list of words to
facilitate discussion
- Create a Feel for F's grab bag that
consists of objects with the initial sound of "F"
- Be sure that there are objects around
the room that also begin with "F" so the Find F's in the
Classroom activity is successful
|
Instructional Procedures
- Introduce the "F" sound
- Discuss examples of words that have
the initial sound of "F"
- Have students feel objects in the
grab bag and then indicate the corresponding word with the
initial sound of "F"
- Collaboratively brainstorm, using
Inspiration Software, to develop a story that uses as many
words with the initial sound of "F" as possible
(Example- Frank the Friendly Frog)
- Give each student a "fishing bucket" and have them go
"fishing"
- The students will choose items
throughout the classroom and identify the initial sound
of the word. If the initial
sound of the object is an "F," the student puts their catch in the bucket.
However if the initial sound is something other than "F," the
student will "throw it back" and keep fishing.
|
Discussion Questions:
Use Inspiration software to work collaboratively as a class to develop
the story, Frank the Friendly Frog.
- What other characters may be in our
story?
- Where might Frank the Friendly Frog and the
other characters live?
- How does Frank the Friendly Frog interact with
the other characters?
- What dangers might Frank the Friendly Frog
face?
- How can Frank the Friendly Frog
resolve the troubles he encounters?
