  Learner Styles

Technology is given in many forms, as television, computer, internet and cell phones.  All of these are different types of technology.  All of these different forms of technology help us to communicate with one another faster, relay quicker messages as well as learn. There are many ways to use technology to create different learning styles within the classroom.  Creating different ways to learn is easier now that technology has given us different methods to choose from.  These different methods are using or having a computer present in every classroom, using email, using CD Rom devices with math/ English activities, having interactive CD that helps explain different subjects, CD’s that help you visualize different periods of history, scientific calculators, electronic testing, as well as classes given on line.  The purpose of this research paper is to explore the different ways technology can support different learning styles.

Enhanced Interactive CD

Technology is “the sum total of the technical means employed to meet the material needs of a society” (Webster Pocket Dictionary, 1997).  With this technology is invented to meet the needs of people in our society.  Throughout the years teachers and parents have been looking for more ways to make learning easier and more interesting to students.  They have tried various ways, and have found that learning visually is one of the number one way to learn ( Scott, Survey)  Therefore teachers as well as stay at home parents have tried to incorporate more ways for their students/ children to learn using visual aids.  Since these visual aids worked and test scores rose, many people began to

  Learning Styles 5

look for other visual aids to use.  After the Computer was invented different authors wanted to publish there books as well as give an enhanced interactive CD that would help those students that weren’t able to pick up the information just by reading this enhanced interactive CD in 2004 is almost made in every subject.  These CD’s aren’t just made for certain age groups they are made for anyone that is in school, from ages 5-21.  There are math CD’S that are provided in math classes that help the student go over math problems.  This helps the teacher out tremendously, because with the class sizes that are given in today’s schools the teacher is not always available to help every student.  These CD’s produce a learning room where the student can do math problems by themselves, and if they have any problems with the math there is a tutor on the CD as well. This tutor is there to instruct you and guide you through any problems that you may have.  Another quality that this CD Rom has is that it will tell you how many problems that you have gotten wrong, so if you want to get more practice you can and do another set of math problems ( De Wilde, Using Technology to Educate Mathematics Students) This would have to be one of my favorites because these disks are really helpful.  I think I like these disk so much because I have used these disks in college.  They have helped me understand very complicated subjects such as biology by providing me with visual aids.

The Resources of Computers

A computer in every classroom is very important.  Having a computer in every classroom helps all children learn how to type and how to use different programs on the computer such as Microsoft Word and Power Point in case they need to do presentations, as well as turn in papers.  It also helps them understand and explore the internet.  The internet is full of so much information that it is helpful to know how to use it and retrieve information.  These are all different types of things that children need to now about so they can start migrating more technology into there learning (Porter, Critical Issue: Using Technology to Improve Student Achievement)

Online Courses

Another method that technology has given us is virtual classrooms.  This is when students take courses online.  These courses are given by teachers and they are just like if you were in a class.  You are given assignments and are able to ask the teacher questions and she can respond to you.  This classroom is sometimes set up in the form of a classroom so that every one is able to respond to the teacher as well as ask questions.  A necessity to this course is email.  This is usually how your homework is given out as well

As reminders about announcements (Hardin, Ziebarth , Digital Technology and its Impact on Education)(Albalooshi, 2003)

I TV Classrooms

There is another form a class without having a teacher present in a classroom.  This is called I TV. This form of class is given in high schools and colleges.  These courses are given in a room where there has been televisions programmed and set up so

Learner Styles 7

that students can sit in this room and have class.  The teacher is on the television screen and is giving instructions and lecturing.  The teachers and students can respond back and fourth with one another through microphones that are placed on the desk tops.  The last two forms of teaching (virtual classrooms: learning online, I TV) are effective to me but some people think that this is not a good idea to incorporate technology as a classroom.  People often ask what if the student needs to know how to do something step by step?  And need the teacher to show them, then what do they do?  Many parents believe that it is not as effective to have students learn from a teacher on a television screen as it is to have a teacher in the classroom with the students (Gwynn Park High School) (Eveland, 2003) some people believe that using the old methods of teaching are fine just incorporate some new ways of learning with the use of technology, but don’t take technology, but they don’t want to take technology and do away with the old fashion way of learning. (Strauss, 1999)

Scientific Calculators

Technology has also created new ways to help students in math sections to compute answers faster and also computing graphs.  The tool that is used is called a scientific calculator.  Scientific calculators are used in algebra classes and higher.  This calculator is an excellent tool to help you in the classroom.  It takes the stress away from writing down every problem by helping you work the problem out by just pushing in the problem on the calculator.  This tool is one of the many that teachers have adopted into there classrooms (De Wilde, Using Technology to Educate Mathematics Students)

Enhanced CD Rom

Another CD Rom that teachers are starting to incorporate in the classroom is those that give visual pictures of certain time periods in history.  These discs are shown by teachers on computers in the classroom.  These pictures give the students the feel as if they were there.  It helps a lot of students visualize what was going on in certain time periods.  These discs also helps the teacher when trying to explain in detail what was going on in those times, it takes the pressure away from the teacher and gives the students a chance to understand for themselves. An example of a CD Rom would be one on the Mid-Evil Times, this disc would give you a virtual tour of a castle as well as a market place that the town’s people bought food from.  This is another perk that technology has created to use to help students learn.

Email

Being able to use the computer is a must in our society today, with that being able to use email is another way that technology can help you learn as well as keep the

teacher and parents connected at all times.  When email was introduced it was used for basic messages and information, but now technology has evolved so much that you can send actual pictures over email as well as sending homework through email (De Wild, Using Technology to Educate Mathematics Students).  This is helpful to teachers and students.  When a child has been absent from school or missed information given, the teacher can just email the entire home work assignment to the student as well as send any information through email.  Another pro to email is that since students have email

Learner Styles 9

addresses then they can email one another back and fourth about homework problems as well as send the exact homework problems that they are having trouble with to there teacher.  Then the teacher can email them back with the correct way to do the problem. Though email can be useful to teachers and students it can also be very useful to parents.  This is useful to parents because they are not always able to schedule meetings with the teacher or even get a chance to call the teacher but if they just sit at there computer at there desk they can send a email, and the same thing goes for teachers they can send emails to the parents from there classroom if there is a computer present.  The internet is one of the great things that have helped students, teachers and parents (Vail, 2003), (Bajcsy, 2002)

Electronic Testing

The final piece of technology has helped create different learning styles is electronic testing.  The electronic testing has become very wide spread, this method of testing is now starting to replace some of the existing standardized test.  For example now in Maryland instead of taking the Maryland Functional Math Test with a booklet and a pencil you are able to go to a computer lab and take this test.  This was a great idea because this cuts down on the teachers and staff administering this test and lets the computer do all of the work for them.  As well as gives the students a break from the ordinary standardized test taking and lets them use the computer.  Another new electronic test is the State of Maryland Learners test, this test is also now given on the computer.  Since this test is given on thecomputer you are able to see actual picture of what the

Learner Styles 10

question is trying to describe.  This use of the computer has really helped students with learning and actually retaining information throughout the process. (Vail, 2003) (Maryland Motor Vehicle Administation)

Effectiveness

In conclusion there is one question that has been asked is the question of effectiveness.  This question has been looked at by several sources and it has been said that “law makers on Capital Hill are willing to cut  the E- rate, discount programs for telecommunications services to schools and libraries” (Trotter, 1998) because of the belief that the use of technology has not been as effective as once thought.  This would mean a definite cut back for technology in schools which would make it harder for students to be able to incorporate the use of the computer as well as the internet into everyday classroom work.  In my opinion I believe that technology has helped me as a student a tremendous amount.  If I weren’t able to use a computer to complete daily task and research topics deeper by use of the internet or use CD Rom to help me understand different subjects then I really don’t think that a lot of information would be retained and understood as thoroughly as they are.  So as a student of the technology era I would strongly recommend the use of technology in classrooms to provide different leaning styles for everyone (Trotter, 1998), ( King, 2000), (PBS, 1999, 2000)
