Responding to Critical Questions

Author
Who created this message? Written in response to Cecil Community College by Amanda Ponko  List the types of jobs of people involved in the construction of the message. Faculty and staff from CCC, Towson and Welmington

Purpose and Audience
Who is the intended audience for this message?  Teacher's coming out of high school, people who have families and want to continue their education

What is the purpose of this message (to inform, to persuade, to entertain, self expression, to teach, to make money)?  Indicate your choice in a complete sentence and explain reasons for your choice.  To inform people about the new programs in Maryland and to persuade people to become teachers.  I think they are trying to persuade people to become teachers because they are in need for teachers.

Construction
How were image, language, and sound manipulated in this message?  Language used actual numbers of teachers

What techniques are used to attract and hold attention?  They tell you when transferring the bad things about it as well as the good things about it so very informative

Form
What type of message is this? (Personal narrative -express personal ideas; Informational-define, inform, explain; Persuasive -makes a knowledgeable judgment and supports argument with evidence).  Describe.  This message is informational because it tells you exact numbers and also tells you about transferring and the perks as well as the down side

Interpretation
How does this message connect with your life experience? It connects with  an life experience of mine because I actually went to a school were there weren't enough teachers.  And then when they started hiring teachers they just started hiring people that were not qualified for the job.  So it makes a difference whether you have qualified teachers as oppose to just teachers.

How does this message compare with other media messages you've received?  Since the message is new it is not going into great detail about the entire article like some other messages that I have received.

Representation
How are stereotypes (or fixed ideas about things, people, or events) evident in this message? That community college is becoming more equal to other universities.

What point of view is represented in this message? (Identify and trace the development of an author’s argument, viewpoint, or perspective)  The author is positively portraying the information that she has received from CCC.

Other
What has been left out of this message?  The success rate and the failure rate of people that have done this program.  It also doesn't tell you the cost of this program, it tells the reader that its cheaper but how much cheaper.

This learning activity was adapted from the curriculum, Assignment: Media Literacy, a resource to build critical-thinking and communication skills for life in a media and information society, developed by Maryland State Department of Education and Discovery Communications, Inc.
