Gregory Crewdson's approach to photography is very similar to Hollywood’s approach to making movies. Crewdson employs a full 150 man crew, complete with set-builders, special effects, and actors. There is even a “chief aquarist” in his employ who is responsible for creating rain on demand with a series of water towers and sprinklers. Everything within the view of the camera lens is intensely choreographed, down to the smallest details. A bottle of brightly colored pills spilling out next to an overflowing ashtray in a woman’s bedroom is there quite on purpose, despite being relegated to the background#. Micromanagement of the set allows Crewdson to combine dozens of images or various elements into a composite that is quite realistic in appearance yet could never have been seen in the real world. |
