Task:  Pat’s Engineering Works is a small company that specializes in complex engineering consulting projects.  The projects typically involve one or two engineers who do data intensive analyses for companies.  Because so much data are needed, the projects are stored on the company’s high-capacity server but moved to the engineers’ workstations for analysis.  The company is moving into new offices and wants you to design its network.  It has a staff of 8 engineers (which is expected to grow to 12 over the next 5 years), plus another 8 management and clerical employees who also need network connections but who needs are less intense.  Design the network.  Be sure to include a diagram.

The 20 workstations (8 for management and clerical employees, 12 for engineers) will have 20 Network Interface Cards (Linksys – EtherFast Desktop 10/100 PCI Card).  In order for the workstations to connect to the network there will be two Network Hubs (D-Link - 16-Port 10/100 Ethernet Switch). The decision to go with 16 port hubs was based on there being no price difference between the 16 port hub and the 12 port hub and the extra ports can allow for future expansion. More workstations or peripherals can be added to the network without the need to purchase more hubs. One hub will connect to 8 workstations and the other hub will connect to 12 workstations.  In addition, a network server (HP MediaSmart Server) will connect to Hub 1 and a cable modem (Motorola SURFboard Modem) will connect to Hub 2. In order for the workstations to connect to their particular hub there will be 20 cables. These are going to be 25’ Cat 6 Network Cables.  There is also going to be additional network cables to interconnect the hubs and for both hubs to connect to the server and modem. The cable connecting the hubs will be a Belkin Cat 5 50 ft cable. The cables used to connect the hub to the server and to the modem will be Cat 6 7ft cables. The server and modem will be placed in the same room as its connecting hub.
