Kid Stories

One of my favorite things about teaching is the great little stories I come home with each day.   Although teachers will probably appreciate these the most, here are a few to tickle your funny bone:

-         One day in my math class my children found that spinning loose change leftover from lunch was the thing to do.  I decided to give them a warning that they would loose their money if they did not stop.   I said to them, “If you don’t put those coins away I will soon be richer.”  One dear darling then followed my warning by calling out, “Who’s Richard?”

-         I was giving directions for a particularly long assignment to my students.   After one in the crowd moaned and groaned I tried to make their work load seem less by saying, “Just think of it this way, when I go home I have to do 21 times the work because I grade all of your papers.”  One of my smarty pants replied with, “Well, you decided to become a teacher.”   This is very true, what more could I say to that?

-         Our class participates in a book club each year.   A fellow teacher and I were modeling for the students how to be a member of a book club.  We told them some of the parents may be in a book club too.  I forget how, but we wound up mentioning Oprah’s book club.  Upon mentioning Oprah, one of my students busted out into a high pitched “Laa laaa laaaaaaaaaa.”  At first, I have no idea what they were doing.  A minute later it hit me…they thought Oprah was opera!

-         As I was packing students up at the end of math, a small friend of mine was finishing up a math problem before joining us.  However, as I was giving directions to the class he got stuck..  I had talked to him many times about not interrupting while I was speaking to the whole class, but he needed help.  So what did he do?  He grabbed his dry erase board, wrote “HELP” in huge letters, and held it up across the room.  My class and I both found this pretty humorous.  After I saw the sign I told him I would make time to work with him the next day.   A minute later he had his sign up again.  This time it said, “THANKS, YOU ARE A STAR.”

-         More to come soon!
