Professional Development Plan:
Integrating Digital Audio and Video in support of learning in specific core content area
.

Digital and audio technology can be great tools for helping students learn more effectively.  Not only does it provide another medium for the teacher to communicate information with the students, but also keeps the students interested and introduces them to new technology.

Name:  Greg Stiffler Contact Information:  gstiff1@towson.edu
Subject:  Algebra  Intended Grade Level:  9-11
Title of Professional Development Activity:  Integrating Audio and Visual Technology into the mathematics Classroom
Goal:  Teachers will plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.
Objectives/ Academic Content Standards and Performance Indicators:

1.12.1a recognize, describe and/or extend patterns and functional relationships that are expressed numerically, algebraically, and/or geometrically (CLG 1.1.1)

  • describe the relationship of sequences symbolically
  • recognize and extend recursive and explicit relationships of sequences
  • describe functions and their properties using function notation\

1.12.2 write equivalent forms of equations, inequalities, and systems of equations and solve

  • analyze the relationships among coefficients, factors, and roots of a polynomial
  • add, subtract, multiply, and divide simple rational expressions
  • perform operations on algebraic expressions
  • apply the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division of algebraic expressions to mathematical and real-world situations (CLG 1.1.3)

Technology Standards and Performance Indicators:  (See bottom of page)
Equipment/ Materials:  - Television, computer projection screen and projector, speakers, PDA's
Preparation:  Create vhs video demonstration of how to solve an algebraic expression and upload to webpage
Online Resources:  PBS Digital Divide Home Series
Instructional Activities/ Procedures:

- During the first 15 minutes we will discuss the advantages of integrating audio and digital video into the
  classroom
   - Show a sample video of PDA's being used"
- Demonstrate how PDA and computer projection screen can be used to create an interactive environment
   - Can display one student's work on a particular problem on screen (anonymously) allowing him/her and others
to discuss, critique, and devise a solution to the question
   - Good for group work because easy to display
- Show video demonstration I created to teachers and explain that students could access video over internet,
enabling them to review at any time
- Group project could include making video lesson for class which we could upload onto the internet
- Finish activity with discussion forum

Discussion Questions/ Follow-Up:  Discussion questions:
-What do you see as the benefits of integrating audio and video technology?  What are some possible problems?
-Cost is probably the most common problem, what are some ways to remedy the high cost of technology?
-What are some ways to get the students interested in using technology?
-How can we as individuals (referring to the teachers present) each use technology at least once every few weeks in our classrooms?
Evaluation ( See starter scoring rubric below.)

Sample Evaluation Rubric for Professional Development Activity

Criteria Complete (5) In-Progress (3-4) Incomplete (1-2)
Use digital video/ audio to improve teaching and learning User is able to create a digital video/ audio file to support a curriculum-based learning activity  User is in the process of creating a digital video/audio file, but has not completed it. Use is unable to create a digital video/ audio file to support a curriculum-based learning activity
User should participate in learning activities by creating digital, audio, and video files. User is able to participate in learning activities by creating digital, audio and video files.  User is in the process of or attempting to participate in learning activities through digital video and audio file creation. User is unable to participate in learning activities by creating digital, audio and video files.
Identify sources for information on digital video/ audio and their uses. User has identified at least three resources to locate information on digital video/ audio and their uses.  User has identified one or two resources to locate information on digital video/audio and their uses. User has not identified no resources to locate information on digital video/ audio and their uses.
Demonstrate an understanding of key issues related to using digital audio and video to support instruction. An inspiration chart has been created to demonstrate a thorough understanding of how digital audio and video can be used to support instruction. An inspiration chart has been created but does not demonstrate a thorough understanding of how digital audio and video can be used to support instruction  An inspiration chart has not been created to demonstrate a thorough understanding of how digital audio and video can be used to support instruction.

Outcomes

Indicators

Information Access, Evaluation, Processing, and Application

Access, evaluate, and process information efficiently and effectively.

     1.   Identify, locate, retrieve, and
differentiate among a variety of electronic
          sources of information using technology.

Assessment for Administration and Instruction

Use technology to analyze problems and develop data-driven solutions for instructional and school improvement.

1.      Apply findings and solutions to establish instructional and school improvement goals.

2.      Use appropriate technology to share results and solutions with others, such as parents and the larger community.

Assistive Technologies

Understand human, equity, and developmental issues surrounding the use of assistive technology to enhance student learning performance and apply that understanding to practice.

1.      Identify and analyze assistive technology
        resources that accommodate individual
        student learning needs.

Professional Growth

Develop professional practices that support continual learning and professional growth in technology

1.      Use resources of professional organizations
and groups that support the integration of
technology into instruction.

      2.      Continually evaluate and reflect on
           professional practices and emerging
           technologies to support student learning
