Animals can use color or shape to adapt to their environment. The use of colors or patterns to blend in with surroundings is called camouflage. Many animals use this to keep form becoming prey. For example, the moth uses patterns and coloration to blend with the bark of a tree.

Some animals use mimicry to keep safe from their enemies. A good example of this are butterflies who look like each other in order to avoid a predator. One may have a stinger or toxic substance while the other does not. Their predator has a hard time telling the difference (Butler, 1994).
Camouflage is when an animal looks like an inanimate object for protection (Butler, 1994).
Mimicry is when an animal looks like another for protection (Butler, 1994).
