What elements are present that allow you to know this is a primary source (i.e. reports research findings, appears in professional/peer reviewed journal)?

This is a case study with a report of all the findings.  It has charts and graphs on it and it thoroughly discusses the study and how it was conducted.

In one/two sentences, explain how the information in this source supports your research question/topic:

It gives supporting information about how colleges and universities view homeschool graduates and information about the requirements.  This helps me to draw conclusions on the overall views of college admission boards on homeschoolers.

Is there any information in this source that surprised you?

Yes.  Some of the college admissions representatives made stark comments on how they thought that homeschooled students weren’t prepared for college.  I was also surprised that some colleges or universities require that homeschoolers take courses at a community college before applying.  In general, homeschoolers perform better than public school educated students, and I didn’t know that some universities viewed them so negatively.

If you obtained this source online, which database did you use (i.e. Ebsco/Eric, Academic Search) to retrieve it?

EBSCO

Shows findings of the academic performance of homeschoolers.  It also has some comparative statistics.

In one/two sentences, explain how the information in this source supports your research question/topic:

This study gives supporting facts and statistics on how homeschoolers perform better than public school students, which was helpful because in my research paper I researched homeschooler’s academic performance.

Is there any information in this source that surprised you?

In homeschooling, all students perform equally as well regardless of race, where in public schools whites outperform blacks and Mexicans on standardized tests and get better grades overall.

I got this from the Home School Legal Defense Association website (www.hslda.org)
